ThedisabilityinclusionimperativeCompaniesthatleadindisabilityinclusiondrivemorerevenue,netincomeandprofit.Wedugdeepertolookatthereasonswhy—andwhatallcompaniescandonexttobecomedisabilityinclusionleadersAresearchreportproducedjointlywith2ThedisabilityinclusionimperativeIn2018,Disability:INandAccenturepublishedalandmarkreportonthestateofdisabilityinclusionatworkintheUnitedStates.GettingtoEqual:TheDisabilityInclusionAdvantagedocumentedthebusinesscaseforhiringpersonswithdisabilitiesandofferedguidanceonhowtoadvanceinclusivityefforts.Theresultstookthebusinessworldbysurprise,elevateddisabilityintheconversationaboutcorporatediversityandcontributedtothegrowingbodyofliteratureontheimportanceofdiverseworkforces.PrefaceMuchhashappenedsincethen,includingaglobalpandemic,significantchangesingeopoliticaldynamicsandmajortechnologicaladvances.Butwearehappytoreportthatinthepastfiveyearsthebusinesscaseforhiringpersonswithdisabilitieshasbecomeevenstronger.Specifically,companiesthathaveledonkeydisabilityinclusioncriteriaduringthattimehaverealized:1.6xmorerevenue,2.6xmorenetincome,and2xmoreeconomicprofitthanotherparticipantsinDisability:IN’sannualbenchmarksurvey.1Theyarealso25%morelikelytooutperformonproductivitycomparedtotheirindustrypeersthathavenotparticipatedinthesurvey,measuredasrevenueperemployee.TheyalsoreceivetwiceasmanypositivereviewsrelatedtoaspectsofdisabilityinclusionthanindustrypeersonGlassdoor.2,33ThedisabilityinclusionimperativePrefaceHowever,thepercentageoftheseleadingcompanieshasremainedrelativelyconsistentoverthisfive-yearperiodeventhoughthenumberofcompaniesthatparticipateinthesurveyhasmorethandoubled.In2018,32%ofthe140companieswestudiedqualifiedasleaders;in2023,with346companiesparticipating,thatfigurehaddroppedslightlyto30%.Interestindisabilityinclusionisclearlyincreasing,butactionshaveyettocatchup.Importantly,though,ourresearchthisyearalsodugdeeperintothespecificchallengescompaniesfacewhenstrivingtoimprovedisabilityinclusion.Theyincludealackofdisabilitydisclosureattheboardandexecutivelevelandincorrectassumptionsaboutthecostofinclusion.HowwedefinedisabilityOursurveycategorizedrespondentsaspersonswithdisabilitiesiftheyreportedthattheyhavedifficultyperformingday-to-dayactivities(e.g.walking,communicating,hearing,seeingevenifwearingglasses)becauseofamental,intellectual,sensory,orphysicalhealthconditionthathaslasted,orisexpectedtolast,atleastsixmonths.Since80%ofdisabilitiesareacquiredbetweentheagesof18and64,it’scrucialtorememberthatanyonecanbecomeapersonwithadisabilityatanytime;thereisno“us”and“them.”4ThedisabilityinclusionimperativePrefaceWiththisinformation,wedevelopedaframeworktohelpbusinessleadersaddressthesechallenges.Wecallitthe“AList”becauseofitsfiveparts:Access,Awareness,Advocacy,Action,andAccountability.Weintroducetheframework,supportedwithcaseexamples,inthisreport.WeencouragereaderstousetheAListtobecomemoreintentionalaboutdisabilityinclusion.Wealsoencouragereaderstoconsiderthisreportacalltoactionforcompanies,shareholders,productdevelopers,busine
